Page 47 – No Political Parties Intended

Dr. W. Cleon Skousen in his book The Making of America mentions some assumptions upon which the electoral process was established:

This entire procedure was set up on the assumption that there would be no political parties and that each state would submit the best candidates it could provide. In other words, it was expected that there would be many candidates. (Making of America p. 520)

The whole Electoral College System is based on the premise that all participants from those that choose the Electors, to the Electors themselves, to the members of the House of Representatives, have the interest of the nation as a whole as their primary concern.
